Cannes Film Festival Buzz

Sure Karl Lagerfeld may have beaten them to the bunch when he screened his short film, Remember Now, at the Cinéma de la Renaissance in St Tropez two days before the start of the Cannes Film Festival, but that didn’t do much to tame the buzz around Cannes’ annual see-and-be-seen affair.

In its 63rd year, the Cannes Film Festival and its accompanying parties are always a destination for A-list stars, filmmakers, and the most promising up-and-comers. Cate Blanchett, who is attending the South of France’s most important festival to promote her latest film, Robin Hood, has already been generating buzz by showing off an icy pink triple organza lamé Giorgio Armani Privé cocktail dress, as well as a gorgeous black and white painterly pre-fall Alexander McQueen dress which the late designer is said to have picked for the actress himself. She wore the McQueen stunner to the premiere of the film.

Also at the Robin Hood, premiere was actress Giovanna Mezzogiorno, who is the only other female judge along with Kate Beckinsale this year. Mezzogiorno will be wearing Vionnet creations exclusively over the next two weeks. Fittingly, at the premiere she opted for a custom rose crepe de chine dress. Also noteworthy was Salma Hayek, who on the film festival’s first day wore the first Gucci couture dress from the newly launched Premiere collection (Gucci is using the word "couture" a la Atelier Versace – they have not been certified as an official couture house). Gucci’s Premiere pieces will sell for around $16,000 and up.
