Aladdin the Musical Coming to Sydney

Australia is “One Jump Ahead” of the rest of the southern hemisphere, with Aladdin the Musical hitting Sydney next year.

The musical first opened in Broadway last year to high acclaim, with announcements of productions rolling out over the next year in Tokyo, Hamburg, London and Sydney following soon after. With the musical version of the 1992 movie arriving at Capitol Theatre in August 2016, it will officially be the first stage in the southern hemisphere to house the production.

Disney Theatrical president and producer Thomas Schumacher is coming to Sydney in January for the casting process of characters including Prince Ali (Ali Ababwa), Jasmine and more, telling Sydney Confidential that he is looking for someone who is the full package. He said, “This show has a lot of demands on actors — they have to sing, dance and act, they have to be beautiful and they are such unique characters, and it is such a youthful cast.”

Thomas has also overseen local productions for Mary Poppins, The Lion King and Beauty And The Beast, the same musical which helped turn Hugh Jackman into a star. “That was his big thing right out of college,” Thomas said. “Many people who have begun with us have gone on to do all sorts of things, but I’m never looking for anything more than a fantastic performer who can make their life on stage.”

We’re sure when tickets go on sale they’ll go fast, so don’t you dare close your eyes.
