Edward Enninful likes to pick unexpected cover subjects for British Vogue. He gave Judi Dench her very first Vogue cover and now Thandiwe Newton makes her long-overdue Vogue cover appearance for May 2021. The actress reverts back to the original spelling of her name for the two covers, both photographed by Mikael Jansson and styled by Edward. For the newsstand cover (below), Thandiwe wears a look from Kim Jones’ debut Fendi haute couture collection then switches things up in Isabel Marant for the subscribers’ alternative (after the jump).
The covers immediately ignited debate on our forums. “I imagine most people will think the cover has a typo. I would have liked something more spring/summer in vibe,” voiced 8eight.
“She really is one of the most underrated and underused actresses around, who is not only very talented, but also incredibly stylish,” admired [Piece Of Me].

“Love this and love Thandiwe. So glad to see her on the cover,” echoed Summer Day.
THD96 shared the same sentiment: “The first cover is stunning. Thandiwe finally has the Vogue cover she deserves.”
“The first cover is astoundingly beautiful! It just looks so classic and timeless,” raved Benn98.
“The colors of the newsstand cover are gorgeous, love the richness of the purple and Mikael Jansson’s lighting here. It really is a beautiful and rather flawless cover photograph. In stark comparison, however, the subscribers’ cover is an eyesore. The red filter and pose are atrocious!” vogue28 called out.
