Jasen Kaplan, Make-up Artist: A TFS Exclusive Interview

Jasen Kaplan’s make-up work can be seen on the faces of some of today’s hottest young Hollywood talent.

Kaplan’s worked with the likes of Paris Hilton, Natasha Beddingfield, and Tinsley Mortimer, among others.

Here, Sarah Howard asks him her three favorite beauty-related questions.

Sarah Howard: How did you break into the make-up industry?

Jasen Kaplan: I started working at the Chanel counter in the Paramus Park Mall in New Jersey when I was 16. I was a "spritzer" selling Allure.

The counter manager asked me to do her make-up! I was too scared to say no, so I did it for her. She had no idea I wasn’t a make-up artist, and asked me to come in on weekends to do makeovers.

When I told her I’d never done such a thing, she sent me to the Chanel Beauty Workshop, and I loved it! I was promoted to national make-up artist after five months. When NARS arrived at the counter at Saks in Short Hills, I fell in love.

Soon after, I went to work as the East Coast training manager. I also began freelancing at MTV, and delving into the world of celebrity. Seven years into my passion for make-up, I was offered a position at Tarte Cosmetics as Director of Education. I now freelance, and focus on my celebrity clients and television.

SH: Five most-coveted products and why?

JK:  #1 – Dior Show Mascara. It’s hands-down the best mascara on the planet!

#2 – Bobbi Brown Corrector in Bisque. This little compact removes all dark circles and is every woman’s/make-up artist’s MUST HAVE!

#3 – NARS Casino Bronzer. Every man, woman, and child looks good in this shade! These days, SPF should be our number one best friend, and since that prevents a good tan, your number two bestie should be NARS casino bronzer. It’s the best color bronzer, hands down.

#4 – Dior Bronze Sun Powder Spray. I use it on legs – it’s like J.Lo’s luster and perfection in a can. Need I say more?

#5 – MAC Blot Powder. Nobody likes a greasy face! I need to blot the T-zone of all my clients, AND myself. This flawless formula never cakes up.

SH: Favorite look you’ve ever created, and why?

JK: My favorite look was Cyndi Lauper for the amFAR gala – because she is known for being "rocked out" and bright.

I made Cyndi look glamorous, fresh, and young.
