Fashion’s take on camo isn’t for blending into the background, it’s about standing out thanks to on-trend silhouettes and clever riffs on the traditional print, like gradient fades, foiled finishes and feminine details. There are even bold color combinations, saturated brights and unexpected fabrics that make it impossible to disappear into a crowd.
The runways best showcase the myriad of camo prints. The trend started taking root in Spring 2017 with different versions being spotted at Marc Jacobs, Alexandre Vauthier and Arthur Arbesser. The Spring 2018 shows further made the case for camouflage, with Jeremy Scott being the biggest champion, mixing it with monster prints, neon colors and fluorescent snakeskin. Zadig & Voltaire, Junya Watanabe and Natasha Zinko also put their unique stamps on the design.
At the most recent round of shows, designers including Michael Kors and R13 worked the print into their Fall 2018 collections. The former seamlessly added the unexpected fabric into his preppy all-American looks via sweaters and motorcycle vests, while the latter gave an athleisure twist to classic green camo by mixing it with loose silhouettes, oversized puffer coats and hoodies.
Fashion girls are already experimenting with camouflage print pieces, donning everything from functional printed cargo pants to more whimsical options like flared skirts with abstract camo prints. And we encourage you to get involved, too. Get inspired by the runways’ mix-and-match approach and team a camo piece with other patterns or pair it with a sexy silhouette for a cool mash-up. The juxtaposition is what makes camouflage feel modern and helps the fabric shed its utilitarian rep.
