From La Perla‘s high-end collaboration with John Paul Gaultier to the mass-retail chain H&M’s designer partnerships, everyone seems to be on a limited edition collaboration kick. The latest to join the pack is Lacoste with their just-launched Legends Project, which brings together 12 collaborators from the worlds of music, media, design, and retail to create a 12-piece shoe collection.

Each of the collaborators were asked to use Lacoste’s signature L.12.12 polo shirt as a springboard for inspiration when conceiving their design, and each of the resulting shoes has a tongue crafted from petit piqué cotton, incorporating a woven Lacoste-branded tab finished with a mother-of-pearl button. Available exclusively at Bloomingdale’s, the collection launched with a special preview at the retailer’s Manhattan flagship on December 9th and is available in stores now.

The shoe designers are: cult-favorite fashion Paris boutique Colette, designer Ato Matsumoto, former Lacoste artistic director Christophe Lemaire, designer Tim Hamilton, footwear magazine Sneaker Freaker, British fashion and style magazine i-D, Japanese sneaker magazine Shoes Master, creator of the sound system Soul II Soul Jazzie B, musician Sébastien Tellier, record label Stones Throw, “secret” Boston sneaker store Bodega, and retail stores D-Mop.

Fittingly the most “distinctively Lacoste” shoe is the one designed by former Lacoste design head (now Hermes creative director), Christophe Lemaire who conceived a white shoe with a thick green sole, the brand’s signature colors. The stand-out, however, was Shoes Master’s high-top black style with multiple crocodile logos on the sides, which managed to pay homage to the brand in a simple, but fun way that stayed true to both themselves and the Lacoste aesthetic.
