Why Gisele Bündchen Decided to Stop Modeling for Victoria’s Secret

As we gear up for the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, complete with the revelation that model Elsa Hosk will be the wearer of this year’s Fantasy Bra, supermodel Gisele Bündchen has revealed why she chose to stop modeling for the lingerie giant.

In her new autobiography, Lessons: My Paths to A Meaningful Life, Bündchen wrote that she was overjoyed when she was given a contract at Victoria’s Secret in 1999 and that it accounted for 80 percent of her annual income up until 2006. Selected to wear the Fantasy Bra in 2000 and 2005, she was happy and confident modeling lingerie, but her feelings changed as years passed. “For the first five years, I felt comfortable modeling in lingerie, but as time went on, I felt less and less at ease being photographed walking the runway wearing just a bikini or a thong,” Bündchen wrote.

In addition to the feeling of uneasiness, the model had nonstop photoshoots and shows, which started to take a toll on her, and she considered whether she should continue being a Victoria’s Secret Angel. A hard decision for Bündchen, she decided to leave it to fate: she placed two pieces of paper in a teacup, one said “yes” and the other said, “no.”

“I closed my eyes and set an intention: whatever piece of paper I chose would be for my highest and best self and be the right decision,” she wrote. Bündchen picked “no” and decided to leave the brand. She said it was the answer she unconsciously wanted to hear. “It was also the answer my body wanted to hear, and I believe, had been trying to tell me for days.”

Bündchen ended her career as an Angel in 2007 but remained good friends with Victoria’s Secret Chief Creative Officer Ed Razek. “I was certainly grateful for the opportunity and the financial security the company had given me, but I was at a different place in my life, and I wasn’t sure I wanted to continue working there,” she said.

I am excited to share that my book will be released October 2nd! Writing this book was a transformative and intense process for me. Uncovering stories deep inside of me made me feel vulnerable and emotional, but through facing my shadows and insecurities I learned how to accept and love myself in a deeper way. My intention in writing this book is to share how I overcame certain challenges in my life in hopes that it could help others who may be going thru similar experiences. Proceeds from the book will go to project Água Limpa, to help protect water sources for future generations.
