After New York, London, Milan, and Paris Fashion Week it was easy for many to forget about Chicago – known more as a foodie capital then a fashion one. That said, Chicago’s fourth annual fashion week, Fashion Focus Chicago, enjoyed its largest crowds to date when it kicked-off October 1st and wrapped-up October 8th.
It seems that every few weeks a new city is being hailed as the new fashion hotspot, but with the showcase’s hot ticket being an all-student show from students attending the city’s four design schools, which attracted 1,500 people, it seems that it still remains primarily a local event (especially given that the first half overlaps Paris Fashion Week).
Besides the student show, there were two runway shows that spotlighted some of the city’s veteran designers. “Now in our fourth fall, people are starting to look for it and look to us for what’s going on in fashion in Chicago,” exclaimed Melissa Gamble Chicago’s director of fashion arts and events.
While in the grand scheme of things Chicago still doesn’t have a particularly palpitable fashion presence, it’s nice to see that local talents are getting their chance to shine and with so many of the country’s top design school located in the Windy City, it might just be worth trekking over.
