Cheltenham Festival: Ladies Day

The Cheltenham horse racing festival is nearly a 200 year old tradition which sees more and more attendees each year. Amongst sporting fanatics in Britain, the event is seen as equally as important as the likes of Wimbledon or the British Grand Prix. The ‘Queen Mother Champion Chase’ attracts the most spectators during the festival, which takes place on Ladies Day. It was named in honour of her to celebrate her 80th birthday and to thank her for her continuous support over the years.

Royals’ Favourite

The festival has always been a favourite with the Royal Family and celebrities, who not only famously own horses, but also use the event as an excuse to parade the latest fashions. This year’s festival has already welcomed Camilla the Duchess of Cornwall and the Queen’s Granddaughter, Zara Philips. Zara was seen wearing a forties-inspired outfit, consisting of a belted grey faux-fur trimmed coat with a bespoke Jane Taylor felt hat. Whereas Camilla opted for a teal bouclé coat, a spotted dress by Anna Valentine, topped with a brown fur trimmed hat.

Camilla Wears Diana’s Old Brooch

Some were also quite shocked to see that Camilla had chosen to accessorise her Cheltenham outfit with one of Princess Diana’s old brooches. The brooch in question, decorated with the Prince of Wales’ feathers and an emerald cabouchon pendant, was originally a gift by the Queen Mother to Princess Diana when she married Charles, and was often seen worn by Diana as a necklace.

Ladies Day Fashions

Whenever Ladies Day arrives however, the usual emphasis upon horse racing is quickly lost by most women spectators to fashion! Ladies day means flamboyant outfits accessorised with extravagant hats. This year has seen a trend towards forties-inspired outfits amongst the crowds; could this be the Kate-Effect at work again? Kate Middleton was recently seen wearing a 40s style peplum jacket suit by L.K. Bennett, whilst on tour with Leicesterand so, it therefore seems she is once again inspiring the masses.
