Gisele Bundchen has made history not only by becoming the face of over 20 brands and the world’s richest model, but also by bringing back the idea of the Supermodel.
Like Naomi, Cindy, and Elle before her, Gisele is both a face and a body and an icon.
Although she intended to be a professional volleyball player, Gisele was discovered at 14 at a Sao Paulo McDonald’s and subsequently moved to New York to model. She signed with Elite in 1995, but her big break was landing the July 1999 cover of Vogue, which touted her as “The Return of the Sexy Model.”
Gisele’s entry into the industry signified a return to form for modeling – after Kate Moss’ waif look epitomized fashion in the mid- to late-90s, Gisele reminded the world of the “Big Six.” These curvy, tall women who ruled catwalks in the early 1990s legitimized the exclusive label of “supermodel.”
While indeed lean and fit, Gisele is by no means the heroin chic girl. She is a nearly 6-foot-tall woman who has the curvy body that made her the most important Victoria’s Secret Angel for the
past seven years.
Gisele turns just 28 this July but has built a landmark career. She has conquered the runway, fashion editorials, magazine covers, and the world of endorsements, like the supermodels before her. Gisele has appeared on the covers of Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Glamour and Rolling Stone, among others.
She has been the face of dozens of fashion houses, including Versace, Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton and Dolce & Gabbana.
While most of Gisele’s recent press concerns her relationship with New England Patriot Tom Brady, she is a celebrity role model in her own right.
On top of her modeling achievements she is also an activist (for HIV awareness, cancer treatment fundraising, and Brazilian government programs), and a businesswoman (she owns a hotel in Brazil and has a line of sandals).
She also recently launched a Vogue line of eyewear.
Gisele earned $33 million last year, making her Forbes’ richest supermodel and the 16th richest woman in entertainment.
