You never want your makeup to match your clothes. Instead, the cosmetics colors you choose should complement whatever is on your body.
This rule is especially true of mustard yellow, a hot fashion hue this fall.
"The woman who is wearing mustard is bold and wants to be a trendsetter," says Sarah Lucero, head of education and artistry for Stila Cosmetics. "When you’re wearing mustard, the fabric is usually opaque and pretty strong. With your makeup, your best bet is to keep it matte – matte makeup with matte fabrics."
Lucero said she would start with an oil-free foundation that provides full coverage without weight. You’d want to cover up any redness so it doesn’t compete with the mustard, especially if you’re wearing the yellow anywhere near the face, she explains.
"You want the skin to look flawless."
Lucero’s other tips:
-Eyes: The base should be warm, neutral shadows, perhaps a sandy color all over the lid and then add a contouring shade of brown. Make sure the brown has a yellow undertone instead of a plum, Lucero advises.
The fun part of the look comes from a navy or sapphire eyeliner, smudged right at the root of the lashes.
"Navy will make the whites of the eyes look brighter, and when you wear mustard, you want a bright and light face," she says. The added benefit of blue, she adds, is that it’s sexy and feminine.
A coat of black or navy mascara will pull it all together.
-Cheeks: Again, you’re trying to minimize redness _ and that goes for blush, too. Lucero recommends the same brown-tone contouring colors as you’d use on your eyes. Her top choice would be her brand’s Convertible Colors in peony, which she describes as a dark peach that also can be worn on the lips.
"It’s very modern to match the color family of the cheek and lip, and modern is also really warm and neutral," she says.
-Lips: If you want something more daring than a neutral, try a bronzy red with hints of gold or a blackberry or cranberry stain, which Lucero particularly likes on darker skin tones.
